History

Windham's roots stretch back to 1691, when its first town meeting was held on land left to settlers by Joshua Uncas, son of the great Mohegan leader Uncas. In the 19th century, the rise of water-powered textile mills shifted the town's center of gravity to Willimantic, which grew into a thriving industrial city before merging with Windham in 1983.
