History

Settled in October 1634, Wethersfield holds the distinction of being Connecticut's oldest town, predating even the Connecticut Colony charter. It was a prosperous colonial trading hub, famously exporting red onions — a crop so central to the town's identity that the onion appears on the town seal. The town also has a brush with Revolutionary War glory, having hosted Washington and Rochambeau's pivotal 1781 war council.
