History

West Hartford's roots stretch back to 1672, when Hartford's Proprietors established a western division to accommodate a growing colony — a community that traces its own origins to Reverend Thomas Hooker's legendary 1636 journey from Massachusetts to found Connecticut. West Hartford formally incorporated as its own town on May 3, 1854, breaking off from Hartford after nearly two centuries as a parish. Long before European settlement, the area served as a winter camp for the Wampanoag people, who prized its sheltered terrain near the Connecticut River.
