History

Settled in 1649 and officially incorporated in 1662 when Connecticut received its royal charter, Stonington takes its name from the rocky terrain that defines its coastline — literally "stony town." Its most dramatic moment came in August 1814, when a British naval squadron under Sir Thomas Hardy bombarded the town for three days during the War of 1812, and Stonington's outnumbered defenders famously refused to surrender.
