History

Sprague was incorporated in 1861, carved out of portions of Lisbon and Franklin, and named after former Rhode Island Governor William Sprague III, who dreamed of building "the largest mill on the Western Continent" here before his death in 1856. His nephews carried the vision forward, constructing the Baltic Cotton Mill along the Shetucket River — an enterprise that defined the town's identity for generations. The original mill burned in 1877, but milling operations continued on the site all the way until 1967.
