History

Somers traces its roots to 1689, when Benjamin Jones became the first settler in what was then called East Enfield — though he only stayed in summers, returning to Enfield each winter. By 1734, the growing village was officially incorporated as a town and renamed Somers in honor of John Somers, 1st Baron Somers, a prominent English statesman. It joined the Connecticut Colony in 1749, cementing its place in New England's history.
