History

Salem's story begins with the Mohegan people, who originally inhabited the land, followed by English settlers in 1664. The area earned the name "New Salem Parish" in 1725 in honor of Colonel Samuel Browne — a wealthy landowner from Salem, Massachusetts — and was formally incorporated as a town in 1819. In 1835, Salem gained regional fame when Oramel Whittlesey founded the Music Vale Seminary, one of the first music colleges for women in the United States.
