History

Plainville's European settlement dates to around 1650, when the land was folded into neighboring Farmington. It grew its own identity thanks largely to the arrival of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad and the Hartford, Providence and Fishkill Railroad, which spurred enough downtown growth that residents successfully petitioned for independence — and Plainville became its own town in 1869.
