History

Norwalk's roots stretch back to 1651, when English settlers purchased land from the Mohegan-Pequot people — the city's very name derives from their language. During the American Revolution, British forces burned much of the town in 1779, a dramatic episode that shaped its rebuilding and resilience. By the 19th century, Norwalk had become a nationally significant center for hat manufacturing and, of course, oyster harvesting.
