About
Barbara C. Smyth is the Mayor of Norwalk, Connecticut, having been elected to the position on November 5, 2025. Her election marked a significant milestone for the city, as she became the first new mayor elected in 12 years and only the second woman ever to win the mayoralty in Norwalk's history. She ran as a Democrat and campaigned on a platform of clearer communication with constituents, a governing philosophy she describes as "governing out loud," along with commitments to responsible development, strong schools, and improved infrastructure.
Prior to taking office, Mayor Smyth assembled a transition team of 17 Norwalk residents to help identify community priorities and concerns. The team conducted two in-person listening forums as well as an online engagement option for residents unable to attend in person. The results of those sessions were compiled into a full report and summary document. Since assuming office, Mayor Smyth has continued her community engagement efforts through initiatives such as "Meet the Mayor" gatherings and "Mayor's Night Out" events with her staff. Her administration has also undertaken an efficiency study of city government, with an update presented by Chief of Staff Lamond Daniels on February 10, 2026. The Mayor's Office oversees the executive branch of city government and administers services including the Summer Youth Employment Program, the Mayor's Energy and Environment Task Force, and the Norwalk Concert Hall's scheduling.
