History

Originally part of the Saybrook Colony, the territory east of the Connecticut River was set off as East Saybrook in 1665, and formally incorporated as the town of Lyme in 1667 — named after Lyme Regis, a coastal town in southwest England. Over the next two centuries, pieces of the original Lyme were carved off to form what are now East Lyme and Old Lyme.
