History

Ledyard was set off from the town of Groton in 1836 by an act of the Connecticut Legislature and named in honor of Colonel William Ledyard, the Colonial commander slain at the Battle of Groton Heights in September 1781. The western section of town along the Thames had been settled as far back as the mid-seventeenth century, giving Ledyard roots that stretch well before its official incorporation.
