History

Killingworth's roots stretch back to 1667, when the area was carved out of lands known as Hammonasset — named for the Hammonasset people who originally inhabited the region. The town once included what is now the separate town of Clinton, which split off in the early 19th century. Its historic Congregational Church along Route 81 still stands as a quiet anchor to that long colonial past.
