History

Originally settled in 1679 by John and Robert Pease of Salem, Massachusetts, Enfield has one of Connecticut's more unusual origin stories — it was actually incorporated as part of Massachusetts in 1683 before being annexed by Connecticut in 1749. Named after Enfield, England, the town later became a significant industrial center, with the Connecticut River fueling mills and manufacturing through the 19th century.
