History

Incorporated in 1734, East Haddam's roots stretch back even further — Indigenous peoples, including the Moodus tribe, inhabited the area for centuries before European settlement. The town's name "Moodus" (a village within East Haddam) derives from a Algonquian word referencing mysterious underground rumblings, now understood to be a seismic phenomenon known as the Moodus Noises.
