History

Originally part of the Saybrook Colony, the area was settled in the early 18th century, with the village of Winthrop drawing Baptist settlers as far back as 1729. As Saybrook gradually split into smaller towns throughout the 19th century, this community carved out its own identity — and in 1947, the town officially renamed itself "Deep River" to match the name already beloved by its residents.
