History

Originally part of the land of the Wangunk people, the area was settled by English colonists in the 1650s as part of Middletown before being incorporated as its own town on June 18, 1851. Its riverside location made it a natural hub for trade and agriculture, and its greenhouse industry later put it on the map nationally.
