History

Chester's roots stretch back to 1692, when English settlers first established a community here on land previously home to a Native American village called Pattaquonk. The town was carved from the northern quarter of Saybrook and officially incorporated in 1836. The Chester-Hadlyme Ferry, granted its operating license in 1769, remains one of the most tangible — and functional — connections to that early history.
