Christine Vitale

First Selectman

Fairfield, Connecticut

About

Christine Vitale is a Democratic politician serving as First Selectman of Fairfield, Connecticut. She was first elected to the Fairfield Board of Selectmen in 2023, running alongside Bill Gerber, who was elected First Selectman in that same election cycle. Vitale served on the Board of Selectmen until extraordinary circumstances elevated her to the town's top executive role.

Following the hospitalization and unexpected death of First Selectman Bill Gerber, Vitale was designated to serve as Acting First Selectman on June 30, 2025. She spoke at a celebration of life for Gerber held at Sacred Heart University on July 25, 2025. On August 25, 2025, Fairfield's elective town officers convened at a public meeting pursuant to Section 9-222 of the Connecticut state statutes to fill the vacancy left by Gerber's passing. Vitale was unanimously appointed to serve as First Selectman for the remainder of the term, which runs through November 2027.

Vitale's appointment has been subject to political discussion, with Republicans pursuing a drive for a special election following her selection by a slate of Democratic elected officials. As of her appointment, she holds the distinction of being referred to in some outlets as Fairfield's First Selectwoman, reflecting both her title and her position leading one of Connecticut's largest towns.
