History

East Lyme was incorporated in 1839 and takes its identity from the Indigenous Nehantic people, whose territory once stretched from the Connecticut River to what is now Rhode Island. The arrival of the railroad in 1851 transformed the sleepy shoreline — then simply called "The Bank" — into the beloved beach community it remains today.
