History

East Haven's roots stretch back to the Connecticut Colony, which granted township status in 1707 — though a dispute with Governor Gurdon Saltonstall saw that status revoked, reducing the area to a parish of New Haven for years afterward. Originally known as Iron Works Village, the town was formally incorporated in 1785 and has been growing its own identity ever since.
