History

Durham was incorporated in 1708, carved from land belonging to Guilford and Haddam, and named in honor of Durham, England. It grew as an agricultural community along the Coginchaug River, and its early civic ambitions were clear — Durham established one of Connecticut's first public libraries. That deep-rooted sense of community investment has never really faded.
