About Beacon Falls

Tucked into the Naugatuck River valley in western New Haven County, Beacon Falls is a small, tight-knit Connecticut town with deep roots and a decidedly unhurried pace. Despite its modest size, it punches above its weight in natural beauty and community pride — a classic New England gem nestled between rolling hills and river greenways.

What to Know

  • The town is bisected by the Naugatuck River, making it a natural draw for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy walking, fishing, and exploring the valley landscape.
  • The historic Depot Street Bridge is one of the town's most photographed landmarks — a charming reminder of Beacon Falls' industrial and architectural heritage.
  • Beacon Falls sits within the Naugatuck Valley Planning Region and is just about six miles from Waterbury, giving residents easy access to a larger city's amenities.
  • The town is served by the Regional School District 16, which it shares with neighboring Prospect, Connecticut, fostering a strong sense of shared community identity.
  • Beacon Falls operates under a traditional selectman-town meeting form of government — as old-school Connecticut as it gets.

History

The land now known as Beacon Falls was originally home to the Paugussett people and was once called Nyumps. In a remarkable early transaction, a formerly enslaved man named Toby purchased much of the land in 1693 for 10 pounds and a barrel of cider. The town was formally incorporated in 1871, carved from parts of Bethany, Seymour, Naugatuck, and Oxford, and named for the prominent Beacon Hill that rises above the valley.

Community & Living

Beacon Falls has the feel of a town where neighbors still know each other by name — a refreshing contrast to the bustle of nearby urban centers. Residents appreciate the balance of rural tranquility and Valley-region convenience, with easy commutes to Waterbury and beyond. It's the kind of place people settle into and stay.
