Roberto Lopes Alves was born on August 30, 1983, to a Brazilian mother and Portuguese father, and immigrated to Danbury, Connecticut, from Brazil with his family at the age of five. He is a graduate of Danbury Public Schools and spent 12 years working at Cartus as a Technical Sales Engineer before entering public office. Prior to his mayoral tenure, Alves was involved in community service through the Danbury Police Explorers, served as a past board member of the Danbury Museum and Historical Society, and organized food and toy drives. He also served on the Danbury City Council from 2019 to 2021.
Alves was elected as Danbury's 32nd Mayor and took office in November 2023. He won a second mayoral term in 2025, defeating Republican challenger Emile Buzaid. In January 2025, he also assumed the role of chair of the Democratic Party of Connecticut. During his tenure, Danbury has maintained an AA+ bond rating from both S&P and Fitch Ratings and was ranked the 7th Most Diverse City in the United States by WalletHub. In late 2025, Alves publicly announced that he had been diagnosed with a form of blood cancer known as lymphoma. He is a devoted husband and father of two children, Catalina and Julius.
