Portland, Connecticut

About

Michael Pelton is the First Selectman of Portland, Connecticut, having taken office in January 2025. He was appointed to the role following the tragic death of Selectman Shaun Manning, with municipal leaders selecting Pelton — at the time the town's longest-serving selectman with 14 years on the Board of Selectmen — to fill the position. Prior to his appointment as First Selectman, Pelton had served two terms on the Board of Selectmen and three terms as a member of the Board of Education, representing the Republican party in Portland.

A resident of Portland for over 21 years, Pelton has a long history of community involvement, particularly in the areas of sports and public health. He has also been active in civic organizations, including serving as a member of the Portland Lions Club. As First Selectman, Pelton holds a full-time elected position that carries responsibilities including serving as Civilian Chief of Police, acting as the local authority on municipal projects and roadways, and administering all municipal employees excluding those under the Board of Education. The office also oversees human resources, social services, and the issuance of various municipal permits and licenses. Pelton can be reached at Portland Town Hall, located at 33 East Main Street, Portland, Connecticut.
