Arunan Arulampalam, born September 15, 1985, is an American politician serving as the 68th Mayor of Hartford, Connecticut. A member of the Democratic Party, he won the November 2023 mayoral election and was sworn into office on January 1, 2024. He is notably the first South Asian mayor of Hartford and is of Sri Lankan descent.
Arulampalam's professional background spans law, government service, and nonprofit leadership. He began his legal career as an attorney at the downtown Hartford firm of Updike, Kelly & Spellacy, P.C. He later served in the Lamont Administration as Deputy Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection, where he focused on consumer rights and small business issues, including action against a notorious Connecticut slumlord. He also previously served as a nonprofit executive and on the Board of the Hartford Public Library.
As mayor, Arulampalam has stated a commitment to strengthening neighborhoods and building a Hartford that works for all residents. In addition to his professional roles, he is a husband and father.
